Why can't i purchase european formulas in north american stores?
European baby formulas are not available in U.S. grocery stores primarily due to differing regulations and labeling standards between the U.S. and Europe. The FDA requires specific nutritional requirements, mainly on the inclusion of a significant amount of Iron for all infants between ages 0-12 months. While Iron is crucial for development, European standards don't align with the same mentality and offer staged formulas suitable for your baby's growing needs.
Overall, ingredient guidelines for European formulas are stricter than those in the US, but despite being safe and highly regarded, some are unavailable locally in North American markets. Many parents however still seek out European formulas due to their high-quality ingredients and strict manufacturing standards.
Should i buy european formula for my baby?

Why does European formula come in different stages?
Great Question!
Unlike North American baby formula which comes in one stage for ages 0-12 months, European formula comes in several (often 2 or 3) stages for the same time period.
Stages PRE and 1 are suitable from birth, Stage 2 for older infants (6+ months), Stage 3 for younger toddlers (10+ months) and sometimes even a Stage 4 for toddlers over the age of 1 and/or 2.
In a nutshell - European formula is more age appropriate as it's designed for your baby's nutritional need as well as maturing body and digestive system. As the stage goes up, it typically contains:
- More starch (if applicable, for creaminess and more filling)
- More fats
- More Iron
- More nutrient and mineal content
Many parents choose European formula for this very reason - it's often gentler on newborn babies between the ages of 0-3 months.
