Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions below
What makes HiPP German "Stage PRE" different from Stage 1?
The fundamental difference is the carbohydrate source. Stage PRE contains only organic lactose, making it the closest match to the thin, fluid consistency of breast milk. Stage 1 introduces a small amount of mild organic starch. This starch acts as a complex carbohydrate that takes slightly longer to digest, helping "hungrier" babies feel satisfied for longer periods. For newborns under 3 months or those with very sensitive digestion, starting with Stage PRE is often recommended.
Does HiPP German contain the advanced folate "Metafolin®"?
Yes. HiPP German was one of the first formulas in the world to replace synthetic folic acid with Metafolin® (Calcium−L−methylfolate). Metafolin is the same form of folate found naturally in human breast milk. Unlike folic acid, which must be converted by the body (a process some infants struggle with due to genetic variations), Metafolin is immediately "bioavailable." This ensures every baby can efficiently use this B-vitamin for vital tasks like DNA synthesis and brain development.
Why are HiPP German formulas sold in boxes instead of tins?
HiPP uses cardboard boxes for the German market primarily for environmental sustainability. The boxes are made from FSC-certified recycled materials and printed with vegetable-based inks. Inside, the formula is protected by a high-barrier foil bag that is vacuum-sealed to preserve nutrients and exclude oxygen. While less "sturdy" than a tin, this packaging significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the product, appealing to the eco-conscious values central to the European organic movement.
When should I transition from Stage 1 to Stage 2 German?
The transition generally occurs at 6 months. HiPP German Stage 2 is specifically "Follow-on" nutrition, meaning it is formulated to complement the introduction of solids. It contains higher levels of Iron and Omega-3 (ALA) to support the rapid brain growth and physical milestones (like crawling) that occur in the second half of the first year. If your baby is still very happy and full on Stage 1, there is no rush to switch exactly on their 6-month birthday, but you should aim to transition by month 7 or 8 to meet their increasing mineral requirements.
Does HiPP German Combiotik contain both Prebiotics and Probiotics?
Yes. The German Combiotik line is a synbiotic powerhouse. It contains GOS prebiotics (Galacto-oligosaccharides) which act as "food" for healthy gut bacteria, and Lactobacillus fermentum, a probiotic culture originally isolated from breast milk. This combination helps establish a healthy gut flora, which is essential for developing a strong immune system and reducing the frequency of common infant issues like gas, constipation, and infantile eczema.
