Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions below
Is HiPP HA "Organic" even though it doesn't have the EU Organic seal?
Technically, HiPP HA cannot carry the official EU Organic seal because the protein hydrolyzation process (breaking down the milk proteins) is considered a "technical" intervention under EU organic law. However, HiPP uses the exact same organic-quality base ingredients—such as lactose and vegetable oils from certified organic farms—as their standard lines. It is essentially an "organic-quality" formula designed for medical needs, maintaining HiPP’s rigorous standards for being GMO-free and free from synthetic chemicals.
How is HiPP HA different from standard US hypoallergenic formulas like Nutramigen or Alimentum?
The biggest difference is the Carbohydrate Source and Taste. Many US hypoallergenic brands use corn syrup solids or maltodextrin as their primary carb to avoid lactose, which can result in a bitter, metallic taste. HiPP HA uses Organic Lactose, which mirrors the natural sweetness of breast milk and supports gut health. Additionally, HiPP HA includes both prebiotics and probiotics (L. fermentum), which are often missing from domestic HA brands but are crucial for strengthening the intestinal barrier in allergy-prone infants.
Can HiPP HA be used for babies with a diagnosed Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA)?
HiPP HA is "extensively hydrolyzed," meaning the proteins are broken down into tiny fragments that the immune system is less likely to recognize as allergens. It is highly effective for babies with a sensitivity or a high risk of allergies (e.g., family history of eczema or asthma). However, for babies with a severely diagnosed CMPA, some may still react to these fragments. We always recommend a "patch test" or a gradual introduction under a pediatrician's guidance. If HiPP HA is not tolerated, an amino-acid-based formula would be the next medical step.
Why does HiPP HA formula sometimes smell or taste different?
Targets "HiPP HA smell" and "baby won't drink HA formula." Addressing this upfront reduces returns and customer support tickets. Expert Answer: Because the milk proteins have been hydrolyzed (split), the formula can have a slightly different scent and a very mild bitterness compared to standard Stage 1 milk. However, compared to US hypoallergenic brands—which are notoriously pungent—HiPP HA is widely considered the most palatable HA formula on the market. If your baby is transitioning from breast milk, we recommend a 50/50 mix for the first few days to help them adjust to the specialized protein profile.
What is the difference between HiPP HA Stage 1 and Stage 2?
While both stages feature the same hydrolyzed protein technology, Stage 2 is a "follow-on" formula with adjusted nutrients for the second half of infancy. Stage 1: Optimized for exclusive bottle feeding, with a focus on easy absorption. Stage 2: Contains increased Iron, Vitamin D, and Calcium to complement the introduction of solid foods. It also has a slightly higher caloric density to support the rapid physical milestones (crawling, sitting up) that occur after 6 months.
