Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions below
WHAT DOES "COMBIOTIK" MEAN?
"Combiotik" is HiPP’s proprietary term for a synbiotic formula—a scientifically backed combination of prebiotics and probiotics. The Probiotic: HiPP uses Lactobacillus fermentum, a natural lactic acid culture originally isolated from real breast milk. The Prebiotic: They include Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) derived from organic lactose. Together, these elements work in tandem to colonize the baby's gut with "friendly" bacteria, mimicking the microbiome support found in breastfeeding. This is why Combiotik is often the top choice for babies born via C-section or those prone to gas and colic.
Why does my HiPP German formula have different stages than HiPP Dutch?
HiPP adapts its staging to meet specific regional preferences and regulations, though the core nutrition remains world-class. HiPP German: Typically offers Stage PRE, 1, 2, and 3. Stage PRE is starch-free, while Stage 1-3 often include mild organic starch for satiety. HiPP Dutch: Offers Stage 1, 2, and 3. These are famously starch-free across all levels, which many parents prefer for babies with very sensitive digestions who struggle with thicker consistencies. Despite these slight formulation tweaks, both lines adhere to the same strict HiPP Organic seal requirements.
Does HiPP formula contain soy lecithin?
A common misconception is that HiPP uses soy-derived lecithin. In reality, HiPP Bio Combiotik formulas (specifically the German and Dutch versions) are soy-free. They utilize Organic Sunflower Lecithin as an emulsifier. This is a critical distinction for parents avoiding soy due to allergy concerns or phytoestrogen worries. Always check the specific label, as HiPP is one of the few global brands to prioritize sunflower-based ingredients to maintain the highest "clean-label" purity.
Is the iron level in HiPP formula sufficient for US and Canadian babies?
European formulas often have lower iron levels in Stage 1/PRE ( 0.5mg/100kcal) compared to US-mandated levels (1.0mg/100kcal). This is because European regulators believe in "staged" iron—starting lower for newborns and increasing it as the baby's natural iron stores deplete at 6 months. If your baby was born full-term and has a normal birth weight, HiPP’s levels are generally considered safe and effective. However, if your baby was premature or anemic, we recommend discussing a small iron supplement with your pediatrician while using HiPP.
Why does HiPP use Palm Oil, and is it "Sustainable"?
HiPP includes organic palm oil because it is the best plant-based source of palmitic acid, which makes up about 25% of the fatty acids in human breast milk. Without it, it is difficult to achieve a breast milk-identical fat profile. Importantly, HiPP sources only RSPO-certified organic palm oil, ensuring it is grown sustainably without deforestation. This provides the functional benefits for your baby's brain and cell development while maintaining the ethical standards expected of a Demeter-partnered brand.
